Indian whisky: from discreet giant to international contender

India is the world's largest whisky consumer and one of its biggest producers. This often comes as a surprise, as the country is still associated with other spirits in the minds of many consumers. Yet beyond the mass-market production sometimes criticised for its composition, a small number of Indian distilleries have chosen a more demanding approach, working with malted barley, rigorous distillation methods and a clear ambition to compete internationally.

These premium producers are now attracting growing attention from European and international whisky enthusiasts. Their success in overseas markets is no coincidence. It reflects steadily improving quality, awards from prestigious international competitions and an ability to compete with established Scottish and Japanese names. Premium Indian whisky is no longer a curiosity, it is becoming a category in its own right.

A broader aromatic range than you might expect

Reducing Indian whisky to a single style would overlook much of what the category has to offer. Its diversity reflects the different approaches adopted by distilleries across the subcontinent. You will find expressions matured in American or European oak casks, gently peated whiskies reminiscent of certain Scottish malts, as well as bottlings with distinctly spicy profiles that reflect a very different environment. This diversity of styles gives whisky drinkers plenty to explore, whether you favour classic profiles or more adventurous expressions.

The distilleries that changed perceptions

Indian whisky owes much of its international credibility to a handful of pioneering distilleries that have successfully established their own distinctive identities. Three names in particular stand out:

• Paul John, available from My French Comptoir, produces single malts in Goa known for their richness, generous texture and distinctive character.
• Amrut, based in Bangalore, was one of the first distilleries to introduce European whisky drinkers to Indian single malt.
• Rampur, located near the foothills of the Himalayas, takes a more delicate approach, producing elegant and carefully balanced profiles.

These distilleries share the same pursuit of quality and a level of expertise that can now stand confidently alongside long-established producers in Scotland and Japan. They represent the profound transformation of an industry once largely focused on volume and now capable of producing premium spirits of remarkable character.

India's climate: an unexpected advantage for maturation

India's tropical climate, sometimes seen as a challenge, can actually become a distinctive advantage when maturing whisky. High temperatures significantly accelerate the interaction between the spirit and the wood. Where a Scotch whisky may require ten to fifteen years to develop its full maturity, an Indian whisky can achieve comparable complexity in just four to eight years. This faster maturation has a direct influence on its aromatic profile.

The result in the glass can be particularly distinctive. Indian whiskies are often characterised by a rich, rounded sweetness accompanied by notes such as:

• Honey, vanilla and tropical fruit on the first sip
• Cinnamon, black pepper and gentle spices through the mid-palate
• Subtle oak and a warm, lingering finish
