The history of Breton whisky

Brittany played a pioneering part in the development of French whisky. As early as 1958, a first product called Royal No. 1, later renamed Le Biniou, was created in Antrain, Ille-et-Vilaine. Distilled by Société des Alcools du Vexin, it was still a long way from today's standards: its label stated 98% neutral alcohol and just 2% malt. An interesting piece of history, but not yet a true terroir-driven whisky.

The turning point came in the 1980s with Warenghem Distillery, founded in Lannion in 1900 to produce liqueurs. In 1987, it launched the first Breton whisky in the modern sense, simply named WB, before taking the next step with the Armorik single malt in 1998.

The movement had begun. The Distillerie des Menhirs, established in Plomelin since 1921, caused a stir in 1999 with the release of EDDU Silver, the world's first whisky made from buckwheat.

Other producers followed, including Celtic Whisky Distillerie in Pleubian from 1997 and, more recently, Brumenn in Camaret-sur-Mer in 2021, reflecting the vitality of a craft tradition that continues to evolve.

What exactly is Breton whisky?

The names “Whisky de Bretagne” and “Whisky Breton” are covered by a PGI, Protected Geographical Indication, governed by precise production specifications. Grain milling, mashing, fermentation, distillation and maturation must all take place within the defined geographical area. The water used for mashing, fermentation and dilution must also come from the same area. To qualify for the designation, the whisky must be bottled at a minimum strength of 40% ABV and matured in oak casks for at least three years.

A reputation built over time

In its early years, Breton whisky remained relatively niche, appealing mainly to curious enthusiasts and visitors to Brittany. Over time, production standards became increasingly refined and its reputation grew. Terroir became a strong part of its identity: some whiskies can express maritime or saline notes, with impressions reminiscent of sea spray, often interpreted as a reflection of their proximity to the ocean and Brittany's coastal climate.

The region's Celtic identity also contributes strongly to its character. It can be found in the names of distilleries and expressions, as well as in references to the sea, winds and Breton landscapes. Combined with increasingly accomplished distilling expertise, this distinctive personality has helped Breton whisky move beyond its regional origins, first winning over French whisky drinkers and then gaining recognition internationally.
