The history of French rum has its roots in the French Caribbean, dating back to the 17th century, when sugarcane was cultivated on the fertile slopes of Martinique and Guadeloupe.

Long produced from the molasses left over from sugar production, rum underwent a revolution in the 19th century when Martinican distillers developed agricole rum, made directly from fresh sugarcane juice. Martinique Rum: The Global Benchmark for Agricole Rum

Martinique is the only region in the world with an Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) for its agricole rum, with some of the strictest production specifications in the spirits industry. Permitted sugarcane varieties, maximum yields, exclusive distillation from fresh sugarcane juice, limits on distillation strength and ageing in barrels of no more than 650 litres — every stage is precisely regulated to guarantee the authenticity and traceability of each bottle.

It is on this island that French rum built its international reputation.

Guadeloupe Rum: An Archipelago of Many Faces

Within a relatively small area, Guadeloupe offers a diversity of terroirs and styles that makes it one of the Caribbean’s richest rum-producing regions. Grande-Terre and Basse-Terre produce agricole rums with distinctive profiles influenced by their volcanic or limestone soils, while Marie-Galante — nicknamed “the island of a hundred windmills” — is home to three historic distilleries renowned for their high-strength bottlings, often at 59% ABV and above, with a bold and powerful character highly sought after by enthusiasts.

Réunion Rum: The Sugarcane Tradition of the Indian Ocean

With its long history of sugar production, Réunion occupies a unique place in the French rum landscape. The island has established itself as a world capital of artisanal infused rum, with a creativity and diversity of ingredients — local tropical fruits, vanilla and spices — that few other regions can match.

Its aged rums, matured in subtropical conditions, develop profiles characterised by exotic fruits and a warm roundness that is highly distinctive of the Indian Ocean.

French Guiana Rum: Rum from the Amazon

On the edge of the Amazon, French Guiana is home to a handful of artisanal distilleries exploring distinctive agricole rums shaped by the region’s unique botanical diversity. Far from traditional distribution channels, these small-scale productions appeal to enthusiasts seeking authenticity and expressions off the beaten track, with wild, vegetal profiles directly influenced by their exceptional tropical environment.

Terroir and the distinctive characteristics of French Rum

French overseas distilleries are, for the most part, family-owned or artisanal producers whose histories span several generations. This heritage is combined with remarkable creative freedom: limited editions, vintages, rare cask finishes and experiments with different sugarcane varieties are commonplace.

Two elements particularly distinguish French rum from its Caribbean and Latin American counterparts.

● Local sugarcane: French agricole rum is made exclusively from freshly pressed sugarcane juice, never from molasses. This produces highly distinctive grassy, floral and vegetal profiles, with a freshness that industrial rums cannot replicate.

● Ageing in distinctive casks: French oak, ex-Cognac, ex-bourbon and tropical wood casks are used for maturation. Tropical climatic conditions considerably accelerate the interaction between wood and spirit: a three-year-old rum matured in the tropics can display a level of complexity comparable to that of a ten-year-old whisky matured in Scotland.

French Rum distilleries with an international reputation

French rum enjoys worldwide recognition that extends far beyond its market share. The Martinique AOC, obtained in 1996, remains the world’s only Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée for rum, reflecting the exacting standards and distinctive character of the industry. Every year, international competitions recognise distilleries such as Neisson, La Mauny, Rhum J.M, Damoiseau and Bologne, confirming French rum’s position as a premium spirit in its own right.

Among the most remarkable approaches, the Neisson distillery in Martinique has established its high-strength agricole rum — often bottled at around 52.5% ABV — as a benchmark among discerning enthusiasts. By avoiding excessive dilution, the distillery preserves the full aromatic intensity of the sugarcane, resulting in a rum of remarkable purity and depth.

How to discover French Rum

The best approach is to start with the simplest expressions before moving towards greater complexity. Begin with a white agricole rum — either a Martinique AOC or an agricole rum from Guadeloupe — to discover the fresh, vegetal signature of pure sugarcane juice. These unaged expressions are ideal for cocktails such as Ti’ Punch and Daiquiri and immediately provide a clear expression of their terroir.
