What is Japanese gin?

Japanese gin is gin produced in Japan according to the traditional principles of the category, using a neutral spirit with juniper at its core, while standing apart through an aromatic identity deeply rooted in Japanese culture.

Japanese distillers draw on the historic foundations of European gin and reinterpret them through local botanicals, precise flavour profiles and distillation expertise inherited from Japanese whisky. Production remains largely craft-driven, with a strong focus on balance and seasonality, making Japanese gin one of the most innovative segments in contemporary spirits.

A recent history shaped by Japanese whisky

Japanese gin is a relatively young category, but its rapid development has been supported by expertise already established in whisky production. Japan's first encounters with gin date back to the early 20th century, when British sailors brought it into the country from England, but domestic production only began to develop much later.

A major turning point came in Kyoto in 2016, when The Kyoto Distillery launched KI NO BI Kyoto Dry Gin, widely regarded as the first authentically craft-produced Japanese gin. Since then, the number of specialist distilleries has grown considerably, applying to gin the same precision and attention to detail that helped build the reputation of Japanese whisky.

Unique Japanese botanicals

The distinctive character of Japanese gin comes largely from the diversity of its local ingredients, which can be grouped into four main aromatic families:

• Japanese citrus fruits: komikan, ichigo, yuzu, sudachi, kabosu, shikuwasa and mikan;
• Spices and plants: sansho pepper, shiso, Japanese ginger, bamboo and hinoki (Japanese cypress);
• Floral notes: sakura (cherry blossom), cherry leaves and camellia;
• Japanese teas: sencha, gyokuro and hojicha.

Gin-producing regions in Japan

Craft gin distilleries have emerged across several regions of Japan, each bringing its own local ingredients and characteristics to the finished spirit:

• Kyoto;
• Okinawa;
• Osaka;
• Sendai;
• Miyazaki;
• Hiroshima.

An aromatic profile combining tradition and terroir

Japanese gin is built around a subtle balance between respect for the category and a distinctive local identity. Juniper remains the central botanical, but Japanese producers often seek more refined profiles in which its character is slightly softened in favour of floral notes, elegant citrus freshness and vegetal or umami nuances.

This pursuit of precision is closely connected to terroir. Pure mountain water, regional citrus fruits and wild botanicals can all contribute distinctive characteristics. Seasonal harvests and the particular features of each region therefore shape gins with a strong connection to their place of production.

Leading Japanese gin distilleries and brands

A growing number of Japanese gin producers now showcase the diversity and craftsmanship of the category:

• Sakurao: produced in the Hiroshima region, its gins highlight regional citrus fruits, woody notes and local botanicals;
• Komasa Gin: created in 2018 by Komasa Jyozo, a Kagoshima-based shochu producer with more than 130 years of history, it brings together Japanese distilling traditions and contemporary gin-making;
• Roku: produced by Suntory, this approachable floral gin features six emblematic Japanese botanicals, including yuzu, sakura, green tea and sansho pepper;
• KI NO BI: an iconic Kyoto gin made with Fushimi water, showcasing meticulous work with yuzu, hinoki, green tea and ginger;
• Etsu: recognised for its fresh, citrus-driven profile with a strong emphasis on yuzu, it offers an accessible and refreshing style;
• Nikka Coffey Gin: produced by Nikka Whisky, it uses distinctive Coffey still distillation to combine Japanese citrus fruits, apple and sansho pepper in a rich, delicately spiced profile.
