Why Brazilian whisky is gaining recognition

Brazil’s tropical climate plays a major part in whisky production. At these latitudes, interaction between the spirit and the wood takes place much more rapidly: while a Scottish or Japanese distillery may need many years to develop a mature aromatic profile, a Brazilian distillery can achieve comparable results in a much shorter period. This accelerated maturation makes it possible to reach a balanced relationship between cask influence and the character of the distillate relatively quickly.

Brazil also benefits from remarkable agricultural diversity. Producers work with traditional grains such as barley and corn, while also experimenting with less conventional ingredients, including local grains and indigenous yeasts, to create flavour profiles that are difficult to find elsewhere. This freedom in the choice of raw materials gives Brazilian whisky a distinctive identity of its own.

The Brazilian whisky scene is largely driven by craft distilleries, which are smaller and more agile than established international producers. This gives them considerable freedom to experiment:

• Finishing in casks previously used for wine, beer or cachaça
• Longer fermentation periods to develop greater complexity
• Original blends and finishes that move beyond traditional whisky conventions

Although export volumes remain relatively modest, recognition is growing. Brazilian expressions are increasingly receiving awards at international competitions, while specialist retailers such as My French Comptoir are helping introduce these bottles to whisky enthusiasts in France.

A vibrant craft whisky scene

Over the past decade, dedicated whisky distilleries have emerged across Brazil, led by passionate producers who often work with locally malted barley or tropical grains. One of the defining features of this scene is its desire to express a genuine sense of place: the country’s agricultural diversity, including corn, barley, sugar cane and tropical fruit, becomes a source of creativity in its own right. Each distillery seeks to bring something distinctly Brazilian to the glass rather than simply reproducing Scottish or American styles.

Based in Belo Horizonte, in the state of Minas Gerais, LAMAS Distillery has become one of the leading names in Brazil’s emerging whisky scene. Its approach combines the foundations of craft whisky production with a clear willingness to challenge convention. Production takes place in small batches using Brazilian raw materials, with close attention paid to every stage of the distillation process.

Two expressions illustrate this philosophy particularly well:
