A long history of sugarcane, a recent distilling Tradition

Sugarcane has been cultivated in South Africa since the 19th century, mainly in the province of KwaZulu-Natal on the country's east coast. With its warm, humid subtropical climate, the region produces high-quality sugarcane that, until recently, was used almost exclusively to produce sugar and molasses for industry.

Premium rum distillation, however, is much more recent — largely emerging after 2000 and accelerating significantly during the 2010s. It is a young, dynamic scene, free from the constraints of longstanding regulations, allowing producers to experiment with raw materials, distillation methods and different types of casks.

What makes South African Rum unique

Several factors distinguish South African rum from Caribbean or French overseas rum.

● Local casks: proximity to the Cape's major wine regions — Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl — gives distillers access to former local wine casks (Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage), creating fruity and spicy profiles that are radically different from those produced by ex-bourbon or ex-sherry casks.

● An unusual ageing climate: KwaZulu-Natal combines heat, humidity and seasonal temperature variations, creating maturation conditions that accelerate interaction between the wood and the spirit without pushing it as rapidly as in tropical island climates.

● Complete creative freedom: without an appellation or strict regulatory framework, South African distillers can work with both fresh sugarcane juice and molasses, use local wild yeasts and blend distillates from different origins and production methods.

● New Harbour Distillery (Cape Town): a pioneer of premium rum in South Africa, producing molasses-based rums aged in local wine casks using a highly artisanal approach and released in small batches.

● Mhoba Rum (KwaZulu-Natal): one of the most exciting names on the African rum scene, Mhoba produces agricole-style rums from local sugarcane juice, distilled in pot stills, with intense and highly expressive profiles reminiscent of the finest Haitian clairins.
