Mauritius: An island shaped by sugarcane

Sugarcane was introduced to Mauritius in the 17th century and gradually became one of the pillars of the island’s economy. Under French and then British rule, sugar production expanded considerably, covering large parts of the island with plantations and establishing a sugar industry that remains deeply rooted in Mauritian culture today.

For a long time, molasses produced by the sugar industry was mainly used to make traditional rum. The Mauritian rum scene has since evolved considerably, with the development of premium distilleries and, more recently, the production of rum directly from fresh sugarcane juice.

This dual heritage allows Mauritius to produce both traditional molasses-based rum and agricole-style rum, giving the island an unusually diverse range of expressions.

What makes Mauritian Rum unique

Mauritian rum owes much of its identity to the island itself. Its volcanic soils, tropical climate and abundant sugarcane create particularly favourable conditions for both distillation and maturation.

The two faces of Mauritian Rum: Molasses and pure sugarcane juice

One of the most interesting characteristics of Mauritian rum is the coexistence of two major production methods.

Traditional Mauritian rum is made from molasses, a by-product of sugar production. These rums generally offer rounded, generous profiles, with notes of caramel, vanilla, dried fruit and spices, particularly after ageing in oak barrels.

Alongside this tradition, several Mauritian distilleries have developed rums made from freshly pressed sugarcane juice. This approach, similar to French agricole rum, produces fresher, more vegetal and floral spirits in which the character of the sugarcane and terroir is much more immediately apparent.

The ability to compare these two styles from the same island makes Mauritius a particularly interesting origin for rum enthusiasts.

Tropical ageing at the heart of Mauritian Rum

Mauritius offers ideal conditions for ageing rum. High temperatures throughout much of the year accelerate exchanges between the spirit and the wood, while the island’s humidity influences evaporation and the evolution of alcohol during maturation.

Ex-bourbon casks are widely used, bringing notes of vanilla, coconut and caramel. Some producers also experiment with wine, Cognac or other casks to create more complex expressions.

This accelerated tropical maturation means that even relatively young Mauritian rums can develop remarkable aromatic depth and concentration.

The best way to discover Mauritian rum is to compare its two main styles. Start with a rum made from fresh sugarcane juice to appreciate the vegetal, floral and fresh character of Mauritian sugarcane. Then move on to a molasses-based aged rum, where the influence of tropical maturation and oak will reveal a rounder, richer and more indulgent profile.
