What is Gold Rum?

Gold rum (also known as “amber rum”)  is rum that has spent an intermediate period ageing in oak barrels, generally between one and three years depending on regulations. This time in wood gives it its characteristic colour, ranging from pale gold to coppery amber depending on the length of maturation and the type of cask used.

Under the Martinique AOC, the term “élevé sous bois” specifically refers to this category: an agricole rum that has spent at least one year in a barrel without qualifying as “vieux” (aged rum), a designation reserved for rums aged for three years or more. It is during this period that the raw distillate begins its transformation into a sipping spirit.

What Oak Ageing brings to Gold Rum

One to three years in a barrel is enough to significantly transform the profile of a rum without allowing the wood to dominate it. The first months in oak are the most active: the alcohol quickly extracts tannins, sugars and aromatic compounds from the barrel.

Unlike aged rum, which can sometimes require some familiarity with tannins and concentrated aromas, gold rum is immediately approachable. This is also why it works so well in complex cocktails (Planter’s Punch, Rum Old Fashioned, Paper Plane) where it adds structure without overpowering the other ingredients.

How to choose the right Gold Rum?

● The type of base rum: gold rum made from agricole rum will have a more vegetal and mineral profile than molasses-based gold rum, which tends to be rounder and sweeter.

● The type of cask: ex-bourbon for vanilla and coconut, ex-cognac for fruit and rancio notes, and ex-sherry for richness and spice.

● Alcohol content: a gold rum bottled at 40–42% ABV will be smoother and more immediately approachable; a bottling at 50% ABV or above will be more intense and reveal greater complexity.

● Geographical origin: Martinique for precision and elegance, Guadeloupe for character, Jamaica for fruity esters and power, and Cuba for lightness and versatility.

• For Cocktails: Select a vibrant, medium-bodied Gold Rum to add depth and warm vanilla notes to your drinks.
