What is blended whisky?

Blended whisky, often simply called a “blend”, is made by combining several different whiskies, usually malt whiskies with grain whiskies. These components may come from different distilleries located across several regions.

A single bottle can contain as many as fifty carefully selected whiskies. Blended whisky is also the most widely consumed whisky category across international markets, and for good reason: it was created to offer an approachable style while retaining genuine aromatic depth.

The origins of blended whisky: a Scottish invention

The story of blended whisky begins in Scotland in the 19th century. In 1830, Aeneas Coffey patented the column still, a method that made grain whisky more economical to produce. This lighter whisky was then combined with more intense malt whiskies to create a smooth, balanced spirit capable of competing with cognac, which dominated European tables at the time.

The style was embraced and popularised by forward-thinking Scottish grocers, some of whose names would later become iconic whisky brands. Blended whisky quickly established itself as the most widespread style of whisky.

How is blended whisky made?

Producing a blended whisky follows a carefully controlled process, with each stage helping to shape the final character of the bottle.

1. Whisky selection: the master blender chooses malt and grain whiskies according to the desired flavour profile, sourcing them from different distilleries.
2. Blending: the selected whiskies are combined in precise proportions according to the producer’s recipe.
3. Filtration: the blend is filtered to remove impurities and suspended particles.
4. Maturation in oak casks: the whisky matures for several years in new casks or barrels previously used for whisky, bourbon or sherry. This stage contributes colour, roundness and aromatic depth.
5. Final blending: after maturation, the producer may fine-tune the profile by combining whiskies aged in different types of cask, allowing the final flavour to be adjusted with great precision.

Blended whisky or single malt: what is the difference?

A single malt comes from a single distillery and is made exclusively from malted barley. It is often associated with greater intensity and a more distinctive individual character. Blended whisky draws its strength from the diversity of its components.

By combining whiskies from different origins and styles, a blend can offer greater smoothness, lightness and, above all, consistency from one bottle to the next. What does blended whisky taste like?

There is no single flavour profile for blended whisky. Much depends on the style sought by the master blender and the whiskies used in the recipe. Depending on the composition, a blended whisky may be:

• Fruity and honeyed, with notes of vanilla or ripe fruit
